life with 3

It has been almost 4 weeks since I brought my youngest son home. Life is different! We are working on a new normal and learning a LOT about life with 3 kids three years and under.

1. Plan, plan PLAN!
When it come to being somewhere on time this doesn't just happen. Every event requires it's own planning committee almost! Night before packing is life saver if I want to be somewhere on time in the mornings. Everything I do is in 3 hour cycles because of nursing. It's crazy how the smallest member of our home changes our lives SO MUCH!

2. Being at home is just fine
I love to 'be on the go', however because of all the planning required I am less likely to go. For the most part I am ok with it because there is very little stress in being at home.
But being people person I tend to get a little low when I am home too many days in a row. So I do make sure an see outside faces regularly!

3. If all I did was feed kids, and play, that's fine
I like completing task, and having a clean house, but the truth is those task can keep, my children won't. The dishes, laundry, dusting and sweeping will all be there when they are napping or have gone to bed. I want to be present when they want me to play cars in the dirt, or bring me a dandelion bouquet.  I want to spend time doing nothing but holding my baby and breathing in his sweetness.

Because one day he won't smell sweet and won't fit in my arms!

Cherishing these moments!

A little late but...HE'S HERE!

So it's been three weeks since I last posted, but I have a really good reason.
That reason arrived February 28, 2013 at 3:50 in the afternoon!
My sweet baby boy is here! His name is Micah Callan.
Fresh baby, he was 6 lbs, 8 oz. and 19 1/4 ins long
Mommy and son 2 hours after birth!
4 days old and so beautiful
Big brother David loves to hole Micah
(Big brother Elliot like him too, but is
NEVER still to catch in a photo!)

2 weeks old!

3 week photo shoot!
My dad (Big Daddy to my boys) is a photographer!
BIG SCORE!
Isn't he PRECIOUS!

Needless to say we are a bit obsessed with our newest addition.
Robert and I also celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary on March 15. Hard to believe we've only been married 5 years since we started 'dating' at 16! I have been with that man for almost 12 years!
Totally forgot to take pictures of us! Oops!

Yes I know I overloaded you with totally baby cuteness.

But I feel it isn't kind for me to keep it all to myself!

3 ways to be 'ready' with toddlers

I like to be early to places but with two boys under 3 that can be a chanllenge. I want to share with you what I do to make getting ready to go easier

1. It starts with you!
Go to bed at a decent hour and wake up before your kids. If your first thought is yeah right! I can understand the sentiment. {Keep in mind I am not talking to moms of babies who wake during the night  but to those whose kids sleep the same consistent 10-12 hours at night}.  Here is what I am working towards. My boys wake up at 7:00 am. I want an hour before they wake. So in order to get 8 hours of sleep I have to be in bed by 10:00 pm at the latest, preferably 9:30 so that I have time to fall asleep.  That gives me from 6:00 am- 7:00 am to myself for various things like:
  • Quiet time and journaling
  • Getting dressed
  • Starting breakfast
2. Keep their clothes simple
I am BIG on clothes matching and I have boys so thats easy to do, simple and matching. Every shirt they have goes with khaki, green khaki, navy or brown bottoms. I don't buy outfits with 'set' top and bottoms  so I don't have to worry about them always being clean at the same time. By keeping their clothes simple and small in number I eliminate to many options and things not matching. Which means getting dressed takes minutes not matter if it me or my husband dressing them.

Now not having daughter I don't know how you make this simple. If you have tips in that area please leave a comment!

3 Keep the bag packed
For us 3 diapers each, wipes, applesauce and cereal bars will cover just about anywhere we want to go. I try to alway restock the bag when we get home from an outing so that's alway ready to go and I don't have to think about it!

I find when I do these things it starts my day well and I don't feel frazzled when I friend wants to do something last minute because I am ready!

1000 Gifts, Reasons for Joy

Let me start off by saying I have never read this

But I have heard great things about it
and in light of yesterday's post I want to start writing them out
1000 sounds daunting

I know they are there.
So I'm starting with the basics and will post from time to time my 1000 gifts update

2. My parents, they have been so supportive my whole life

3. Justine, my special needs sister who taught me so much as a young child

4. Vejay, my little brother he is 20 years younger than me and makes me laugh ALL THE TIME!

5. My Robert, liked him at 15, loved him at 18 married him at 22!

Now I am not going to always put pictures but when I can I will!

Getting a Handle on Tantrums

A few days ago Paula from Hope for the Future wrote a piece about dealing with tantrums. I was asked to contribute. Below is the whole piece. Paula was only able to use the piece in parts. I wanted to share with you one of the ways we handle tantrums in our home. Having two boys 11.5 months apart we deal with tantrum everyday.
My youngest E is 18 months and is the easiest to deal with when it comes to tantrums. For the most E’s tantrums end as easily as the start. He screeches out and then is pleasant even if he doesn’t get his way. On the occasion that I have to get on to him, I always get eye level and in a firm voice tell him no to his behavior and what I expect. Now E is tenderhearted so he will burst into tears at a firm no.D on the other hand, is my rambunctious 2 ½ year old is not that easy.  D requires physical force, meaning that something thing must be done to him (restrained), taken from him, and sometimes he must be removed from the situation.  So this is how it usually is between D and me.

  • ·      D will do something that he knows is not allowed like stand on the couch and play with the mini-blinds. I will tell him, “ D no! Do not touch the mini blinds and sit on your bottom.”
  • ·      D obeys for 2 seconds and is right back to his mischief. I repeat myself but physically sit him and remove his hand. Here is where the tantrum starts.
  • ·      D will fall back on the coach stiffen his body. I tell him “mommy said to stop and you are disobeying “ He yells “NO!!!” I remove him from the room and take him to his room, and say, “You do not tell mommy no. You must calm down or you will sit on your bed until you do.”
  • ·      If he doesn’t comply I sit him on his toddler bed, leave the room, close the door and set the timer for 2 min. This step is repeated till my son has calmed down enough that I can talk to him without listening to screaming, crying or whining, I do not tolerate any of these is a disobedience situation.
  • ·      Once he is calm, I take him back to where is was misbehaving (if it is applicable and repeat my expectation).

I know that this seems tedious and long, but the goal is training. I don’t want to have to worry every time I go to someone’s house that my son is going to stand on his or hers furniture. I want to raise sons that respect rules and authority.
Proverbs 22:6  “Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old he will not depart from it.”
Proverbs 22:15 “Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline drives if far from him”

I hold to this verse during tantrums. My child is being foolish, he doesn’t know how he aught to behave or act. Which is why God saw fit to give him to me so that I can train him and discipline him. The world around us is counting on the mother, fathers and caretakers of children to live up to these verses. If we do not we are left to a world led by foolish, wayward undisciplined men and women.

I look forward to reading how you handling tantrums with toddlers.

{Part 1} At home with Mary and Martha

The key to unlocking the mystery of Mary and Martha is Balance

If you are a christian woman the topic of Mary vs Martha comes up often. Friday a very wise women from our church spoke to a room full of moms of preschoolers about this very topic.

Luke 10:38-42
Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a villiage. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thins is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her."

For me at my core I am a Martha. I'm all about getting things done, efficiency and perfection. Now even this is at my core you could come to my home and think otherwise. But it is who I am. It can be hard to combat that when you have passages like Proverbs 31 where we see all the things that she does!

An excellent wife who can find ?
She is far more precious than jewels
The heart of her husband trust in her,
and he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good, and not harm
all the days of her life.
She seeks wool and flax
and works with willing hands
She is like the ships of the merchant;
she brings her food from afar.
She rises while it is yet night
and provides food for her household
and a portion for her (house)maidens
She considers a field and buys it;
with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard.
She dresses herself with strength
and makes her arms strong.
She perceives that her merchandise is profitable.
Her lamp does not go out at night
She puts her hands to the distaff
and her hands hold the spindle.
She opens her hands to the poor
and she is not afraid of snow for her household,
for all her household are clothed in scarlet.
She makes bed coverings for herself;
her clothing is fine linen and purple.
Her husband is known in the gates
when he sits among the elders of the land
She makes linen garments and sells them;
she delivers sashes to the merchant.
Strength and dignity are her clothing.

I don't know about you but I am exhausted just reading all that she does. Its hard not to think that is all are jobs as wives and mothers entail. But there is more to it.
Now to clarify as Holly said, there are tasks that have to be done. Unless you are keep a secret from the rest of us wives and mothers we all have 'to do' list.
cleaning
cooking
shopping
teaching
training
These things don't do themselves but our hearts attitude about it speaks volumes

All of these things the Mary heart and the Martha hands take BALANCE
Holly spells it out here:

B- Be simple;
There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under the heavens Ecclesiastes 3:1
As a mom of a preschooler I have to remember that every idea I come across on google or pinterest

A- Allow for margin;
If you know that it take 15 min to get your family from the door to the car and 15 minutes to get to where you need to go but only allow yourself exactly 30 minutes you are going to be late. Because we all know that everyone needs to go to the bathroom at the last second or someone can't find their shoe. But if you allow yourself 45 minutes you will more than likely be on time if not early.

L- Line up with Christ's priorities;
but seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 22:39

A- Ask the Lord for wisdom in your personal decisions about time and priorities. Satan wants you to believe you can do this without God! If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to al without finding fault, and it will be given to him. James 1:5

N-Never put project before people:
and the second are like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself' Matthew 22:39.  Tasks should NEVER be more important than my husbands, my boys, my family or my friends

C- Commitments:
What is important vs extra? Only you and your husband can make this decision. Don't base what you do on what your friend, sister or mother is doing!

E- Excellence DOES NOT EQUAL perfection. Now repeat that 10 times throughout your day!

{Part 2} is ready for reading!

These thought are my takeaways and thought about the talk that was given by Holly Barnett on May 4, 2012

Hooray for Weekends!

I am SO excited!

If you remember from Monday I shared that the hubs and I are going to Abilene for the weekend. Well today is the day! We are dropping the boys off at Ohme's house heading to the mall to get a few last minute things, shoes(for the hubs he is in the wedding) earrings, and a gift for the happy couple! Then I get 3 uninterrupted hours in the car with the man I said "I do" to 4 years and a day ago.

Yes yesterday was the anniversary. We enjoyed dinner out at  La Calle Doce a mexican seafood place in Lakewood. For all you Dallas peeps if you haven't been it is great. Their cod stew is pretty amazing. Then had a drink at Gloria'a
Enjoying a Mojito in the patio

Simply handsome!
So now I am at my parents getting my hair done.
It is so nice having a beautician in the family, she can turn my mass of curls in to silky straight locks!

Signing off for the weekend!
Will post pictures of the wedding later!

10 Things I want to teach my sons

Being a boy mom makes me think often about the life lessons I want to teach my boys. Being a gentleman is a lost art is seems. My desire is to bring up boys who grow to be great men of God and southern gentleman.
  1. Love the Lord your God with all your Heart. Deuteronomy 6:5-9 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down, and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hand and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the door-frames of your house and on your gates.
  2. Respect your elders. So many kids these days have no respect for those who have lived longer. I want my boys to say 'yes ma'am' 'yes sir' give up their seat to an adult.
  3. Respect women. All women, all ages. Open the door, pull out her chair, get to know her for what you can give her not for what he can get from her.
  4. Manners. This includes addressing people, introducing themselves, polite, table manners{not talking with your mouth full, passing food the right direction, no elbows etc}
  5. Carry on a dinner conversation. This means actually talking and no electronics. I hate when I see a family out and everyone is on their phone, or tablets.
  6. Cook. I want my boys to know how to cook about a dozen different meals. I want him to know how to make a complete meal with sides that are vegetable and starch. I know that their future wife will appreciate that!
  7. Do laundry. Separate clothes by color and type. To know when to add bleach, stain remover and fabric softener. Wash/Dry on the correct settings for the type of clothes and PUT THE CLOTHES AWAY!!!
  8. Have a good work ethic. Understand that work is hard at times. It isn't about having fun all the time and you do things that are enjoyable. Go the extra mile. Look for things to do even when your tasks are completed. This is a foreign concept to most young people.
  9. Manage their money. I want my boys to know at a early age how to manage their money. We will probably get Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace Junior and go through that with them in the next year or so.
  10. Enjoy life. I'm not encouraging them to think life is a fun free for all. But not be absorbed in work, service, obligation they can't let loose and enjoy the gifts the Lord has blessed them with. To foster relationships with others and have fun
What are you hoping to teach your children? Are they gender specific or all inclusive?
I'd love to hear!

    Happy New Year 2012

Well its a new year. So much happened in 2011 it is crazy to think about

    • We moved at the tail end of 2010 and have been enjoying a house and yard all of 2011.
    • D turned 1 Jan 14
    • E turned 1 Dec 30
    • Celebrated our 3rd anniversary
    • Got a new to us Trailblazer
    • Joined the Leadership team at my churches Parents of Preschoolers ministry
    • Reconnected with old friend

Just the highlights. Being a stay at home mom leads to a pretty non eventful year. Can't get fired, or promoted. Though it may seem stagnant it is anything but boring. My boys keep me on my toes.

I am looking forward to this upcoming year. I am not too big into New Years Resolutions, however I decided to make a few.

    1. Be super intentional about friendships, and putting others first
    2. Meal plan and do once a month cooking (Onceamonthmom
    3. Organize/Declutter my small home to maximize every sq. in. (MySimplerLife)
    4. Pay off debt
    5. Save for a house
Nothing awe inspiring but this 5 things will make for a better year. Do you go NYR? I don't plan to take this too lightly. I really want all of these things even more than I want to loose weight, which is always the #1 NYR. I am so thankful for another year, month, week,  and day to serve the Lord. May my resolutions give glory to Him in 2012!

    Happy New Year Ya'll!

    I'm back!

    Hello everyone,
Man not having home internet stinks! I was hoping to have it by now but to no avail. I'm at my parents basically letting you know that I haven't left blogland though I am SERIOUSLY behind. When I started my blog I thought I would be much farther along in blogging than I am now. Oh well God has a plan. I have been working on some fun projects though.

My current obsession is painting furniture with the $5 oops paint that I have been finding at Lowes. The best part is the colors have been spot on for what I want.  I am in the middle of working on a desk that belonged to my husbands uncle. I love it because it is REAL wood, and free the project is going to cost me around $20 between  new knobs, paint, sandpaper and sealer! What a deal. I will reveal the before and after as soon as I am done. Which will hopefully be this weekend.

In other news my family is prayerfully considering buying a home instead of renting. I am excited about the possibility of having our own space that I can paint, decorate and not worry about repainting. I am looking forward to not having to move every few years. But nervous about buying a money pit, having that much debt, and being totally responsible for the property.

I know that one day I will have to grow up and own a home(simply because renting a bigger house would send us to the poor house) but I am not sure I am ready. I am however very thankful for the things I do have and am constantly reminding myself the be content were I am and not dwell only in the future. My thankful list
Our current rental which our landlord reduced our rent by $200/mo praise the Lord!
    My wonderful, fun, cute sons
    My amazing caring husband
    My parents and in-laws
My husbands jobs that provide for all our necessities and some extras
Last but not least my God in whom I find my strength and comfort!

    Many blessings to you all!

Thankful Thursday~Four weeks with 2 boys

Today my new baby Elliot is 4 weeks old! Oh how time flies with 2! It is amazing that I am able to get anything accomplished! But some how I am able to:

    1. keep our new little home clean,
    2. laundry done,
    3. boys fed, diapered, and clothed,
    4. cook breakfast, lunch and dinner
    5. Grocery shop
I also am able at times to do things for myself with and without the boys

    1. Attend MOPS and Building Blocks
    2. Go shopping for clothes for MYSELF!!!
    3. Go out with girlfriends
    4. In Feburary attend Bible study
Its definitely harder with two, it takes twice as long to do anything, but I love my boys and wouldn't trade it for the world! I am so thankful for my family I wouldn't trade them for anything!

    Christmas Traditions

Now that I have a child this Christmas I have been thinking of what I want to be our family Christmas Traditions.

Here are my top 10 possibilities

    1. Having and Advent Calender
    2. Picking a Angel Tree child per our kids
    3. Driving to look at Christmas lights
    4. Seeing Santa at the mall
    5. Volunteering at a shelter where less fortunate children will be spending Christmas
    6. Family Christmas Pictures
    7. Opening special pj's on Christmas Eve to wear for Christmas morning
    8. Watching a Christmas movie Christmas Eve
    9. Attending Christmas Eve service
    10. Special Christmas morning breakfast
These are just some of the ones that I can think of off the top of my head. I think doing all of it won't be too much, spread out over the month of December. I just know for sure that I do not want my children to think that Christmas is all about them and the presents they can get. Christmas is ALL about Christ coming to be our Savior  so that we may have eternal life, the BEST gift of all.  I want to always keep gift giving low on the Christmas priority list. No TONS and TONS of gifts.

    Some questions to ponder:
    What are your traditions?
What is the focus of Christmas at your home?
What would you change, if anything about how Christmas is celebrated at your home?

    Thankful Thursday

So it happens this time of year that everyone talks about what they are thankful for. I see no reason to change this. It is something I should do daily. I may have to start a once a week or month ' Thankful Thursday' post. So I am starting today Thanksgiving Day to give thanks

    • First and foremost I am thankful for my Lord and Savior, who laid down his life so that I might be saved
    • My little family of almost 4; Robert, David and Elliot(just 6 weeks left little man), I love my men
    • My immediate family, my parents and sibling, and Robert's parents and siblings.
    • My extended family, grandparents (all of mine are still living!) aunts, uncles and cousins
    • That I have a hard working husband who on any given week works 3-4 jobs so that we can have the necessities and some luxuries
    • Those necessities being, a home, food, electricity, clothing, running water
    • Those luxuries, 2 cars, gasoline, fancy cellphones, a computer,
    • Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University. Learning now to avoid many mistakes American's make with the money God has given them
    • Watermark Community Church. A loving body of believers who serve, equip, teach, and love each other
    • My church playgroup, MOPS, and Building Blocks,
    • Friends
    • Mary Kay

These are the big things, each of these could be broken down even further, but I will do that in my regular Thankful Thursday.

I can always find something to be thankful for. All have to do is think about families who don't have a home, food, or a job. I can think about children who are fatherless/motherless. I can think about countries stricken with famine and genocide.

I have MUCH to be thankful for, so do you! If you are able to read this post that means you have internet, or a phone w/ internet capability, or access to friend, family or library with it. That right there is a luxury that we, that I take for granted.

I hope to live this next year more thankful than the last, that I can teach my sons to be thankful. That most of the things in life we come to expect are really privileges. I hope that my family will spend 2011 blessing others who feel that they don't have much to be thankful for. That the Lord will use me to be light to those who are in darkness, so that they can have a Heavenly Father to be thankful for!

    God Bless

    Adopting

This morning my husband and I attended the Wait No More conference that was a partnership of Focus on the Family and the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. It was very eye opening regarding foster care and adoption.

This is something that my family wants to pursue. I know it won't be easy. There are so many broken, hurting children in the Texas foster system. There are children who have faced more hardship than I can even imagine.

    But we Christians by following Christ command in James 1:27;
~can be the home and family they haven't ever had
     ~can be Christ to them
~can show them the love of the Father
~can show them a brighter future

    Stroller Shopping

I am always so frustrated when I enter a baby store! Why in the world is baby gear SO EXPENSIVE!!! We are expecting our second boy in a little under 3 months. So I was in BuyBuyBaby looking for a double stroller that will fit into my Honda Civic trunk.
The stroller (see below) that goes with my car seat is HUGE
The Chicco Double stroller suggested retail $300.00
It folded well but it is huge! I mean I am only 5'2 and that handle has to be 4'3 high! It was to my chest!

Kolcraft Contours Options Tandem Sug. Retail $280.00

This is the one I want but the didn't have for me to test out my car seat. But these two strollers where the cheapest price wise, but overall well made strollers. I am still fearful that non of them will fit into our very very VERY small car trunk.

How did you pick your stroller?

This whole process is stressful. So many options, so many models, so many prices, so many review... AGH it is enough to make a woman go mad! My sweet hubby was with me and said "why are you stressing about this, just pick the one you like best." I wish it were that easy, however there are too many what if's.

Where do you do your research? This Diva momma needs some help!!!!

Book Review - Becoming the Woman of His Dreams

So I just finished a great book that has inspired me to be a better wife.
The books is 'Becoming the Woman of His Dreams by Sharon Jayness
This book dives into into the seven qualities every man longs for. She outlines how to serve your husband by meeting these basic needs
    Which are:
    1. Prays for Him
    2. Respects Him
    3. Adores Him
    4. Initiates Intimate Friendship with Him
    5. Safeguards Her Marriage
    6. Encourages Him
    7. Sexually Fulfills him

Her endorsement are many here is some that I really liked

“All women have a desire to be loved and admired by their husbands as a Proverbs 31 woman. Every man needs to be respected by his wife. Sharon has captured the essence of a man’s core needs and offers practical steps women can take to be the woman of his dreams. As men experience the ‘praises’ of their wives, they in turn will be free to love and admire their wives. If you are looking for a book that will encourage you, you’ve found it—Sharon delivers help and hope on every page.”
Dennis Rainey, President of Family Life

“As we at Promise Keepers endeavor to help men become better husbands and fathers, it’s encouraging to know that others are doing the same thing for the fairer sex. I’d highly recommend Becoming the Woman of His Dreams to any woman who wants to have a better marriage. Author Sharon Jaynes hits the nail squarely on the head when it comes to understanding what a man really seeks—and even yearns for—in a wife.”
